Best Paper Award. An
award will be given to the best paper of the Conference selected
by the Paper Awards Committee. This Award is sponsored by Itesoft.

Best Student Paper Award.
Eligibility for the award is restricted
to papers authored or co-authored by a student who must have been
a registered student at the time of paper submission. This Award
is sponsored by IBM
R&D Labs.
Winner: Partha Pratim Roy, Umapada Pal, Josep Llados and Mathieu Delalandre. Multi-Oriented and Multi-Sized Touching Character Segmentation using Dynamic Programming .

Best Industry Related Paper
Award. The purpose of this award is to acknowledge and encourage
excellence research with potential for viable commercial impact.
Eligibility for the award is restricted to papers authored or
co-authored by people having an industrial affiliation.
Winner: Yongqiang Wang and Qiang Huo. Design Compact Recognizers of Handwritten Chinese Characters Using Precision Constrained Gaussian Models, Minimum Classification Error Training and Parameter Compression .
ANNOUNCEMENT
OF IAPR/ICDAR 2009 AWARDS RECIPIENTS
The IAPR Technical Committees on Graphics Recognition
(TC10) and Reading Systems (TC11) are pleased to announce the recipients
of the IAPR/ICDAR 2009 Awards.
The IAPR/ICDAR Outstanding
Achievements Award is presented to Prof. Horst Bunke
for his outstanding and continued contributions to research and
education in handwriting recognition and document analysis, and
services to the community.
Prof. Bunke will deliver
the Opening Keynote Speech at ICDAR2009 in Barcelona on July 27,
2009.
The IAPR/ICDAR Young
Investigator Award is presented to Prof. Katrin Franke
for her outstanding contributions to handwriting analysis and
computational forensics.
Congratulations to the awardees!
The awards ceremony will be held during ICDAR2009
in Barcelona, Spain.

FOR NOMINATIONS FOR IAPR/ICDAR 2009 AWARDS
The ICDAR Award Program is an established program
designed to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions
to the field of Document Analysis and Recognition in one or more
of the following areas:
- Research
- Training of students
- Research/Industry interaction
- Service to the profession
Every two years, two awards categories are presented.
Namely, the IAPR/ICDAR Young Investigator Award (less than
40 years old at the time the award is made), and the IAPR/ICDAR
Outstanding Achievements Award. Each award will consist of a
token gift and a suitably inscribed certificate. The recipient of
the Outstanding Achievements award will be invited to give the opening
key note speech at the current ICDAR conference, introduced by the
recipient from the previous conference.
Nominations are invited for the 2009 ICDAR Awards
in both categories. The nomination packet should include the following:
- A nominating letter (1 page) including a brief
citation to be included in the certificate.
- A brief vitae (2 pages) of the nominee highlighting
the accomplishments being recognized.
- Supporting letters (1 page each) from at least
3, and no more than 5 active researchers from at least 3 different
countries. The nominator cannot also serve as a supporter.
A nomination should be put forward by a researcher
(preferably from a different Institution than the nominee) who is
knowledgeable of the scientific achievements of the nominee, and
who solicits and organizes the letters of support. Self-nomination
is not acceptable.
The submission procedure and the review process
are strictly confidential.
Please send these, preferably as a single pdf file,
to Dr. Liu Wenyin (csliuwy @ cityu.edu.hk). Deadline for receipt
of nominations is April 15th, 2009 but early submissions
