Face detection, recognition and analysis.

Objectives:






























Face Detection and Recognition . Our research is focused on two problems: generic face detection and recognition under varying (illumination, viewing direction) conditions . In particular, our work is concentrated on iconic representation techniques for both detection and recognition, and aimed at answering the following questions:
  • What is a good representation for face detection and recognition?
  • How can we manage the problem of dimensionality reduction during the recognition process?
  • Which dynamic information can be extracted from sequences in order to increase the recognition abilities of a system?
Faces are statistically (Principal Component Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling, Discriminant Analysis) processed in order to obtain a low dimensional probability density model which is useful for both detection and recognition.

We are developing a new model (based on Hiddent Markov Models) to allow dynamic recognition, that is, recognition during face actions. This characteristic allows the recognition when temporal occlusions or severe illumination conditions are temporally present.

Face Analysis . The successful automatic extraction of facial features is strongly dependent on the existance of feature model that should be descriptive enough to embody common shape, but flexible enough to allow some degree of variation. In this context deformable models have recently been accepted as a standard technique to segment different features in facial images. Despite the good approximation of the salient features in a facial image, the resulting shapes of the segmentation process seem somewhat artificial with respect to the natural feature shapes. In this project we perform the facial features segmentation via active contour models. The snakes give closer and more natural representation of the detected feature shape as well as have reduced computational cost.
In order to improve the behaviour of the snake we consider a snake guided by a model of the facial feature we are looking for. The segmentation consists in locating the feature by terms of a combination of the method of integral projections and correlation of the image with the model. Afterwards, a model of the feature is used as an initial snake that is deformed by the edge, ridge and valley points to adjust to the image data. Different criteria of symmetry and smoothness help the snake to detect the shape of the feature. The result of the project work (the shapes of the facial features) has multiple application - speech recognition, recognition of facial expressions, model-based compression of facial images in teleconferences, etc.
