Smart Recycling with Computer Vision – World Recycling Day 2024
Today is World Recycling Day, and it is an appropriate moment to reflect on the importance of recycling in preserving our planet. Computer Vision can play an important role in improving recycling and contributing to a greener and more sustainable future. At CVC, we are developing innovative solutions to enhance recycling practices. Here is a closer look at some of our initiatives in this field:
Vision systems to classify plastics in recycling plants
CVC has developed vision systems tailored for recycling plants. Using hyperspectral imaging and computer vision algorithms, we have created a system capable of accurately identifying and categorizing different types of plastics on conveyor belts. This technology helps to improve the accuracy and efficiency of recycling processes.
Coen Antens, head of the CVC's innovation unit, explains the project in this video.
#EcoMate: contributing to better recycling at homes
Recycling starts at home, but knowing what goes where can sometimes be confusing for citizens. That's why we are developing EcoMate, an application that helps users identify household waste and provides guidance on the correct disposal bin.
This project has seen contributions from 20 high schools and around 450 students, facilitated through two editions of the Research, Creation & Service program by the Education Department of the Government of Catalonia. Through an educational program at schools, students help us to train and validate the system. For further insights into the first edition of this program, you can read our blog post here.
On World Recycling Day, let's think about the impact of recycling and how every action can make a difference. Technology and innovation are key elements in contributing to a greener and more sustainable future!
