Postdoctoral position for the Quantum Machine Learning Group at Computer Vision Center
Job Reference : 20250424-QML-R
Closing date: 30/04/2025
About CVC
The Computer Vision Center (CVC) is a non-profit research center established in 1995 by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Its mission is to carry out cutting-edge research that has the highest international impact in the field of computer vision. It also promotes the transference of knowledge to industry and society.
Computer vision is an exciting research area and an omnipresent technology, essentially empowering machines with the sense of vision. The CVC is a successful marriage between knowledge and innovation. In addition to our cutting-edge scientific achievements, we have established lasting ties with industrial partners and created several spin-off companies.
Context and Mission
The Quantum Machine Learning at CVC (QML-CVC) group is looking for a physicist, engineer or mathematician to collaborate on a research project on Quantum Machine Learning. The QML-CVC group is a multi-disciplinary team comprised of physicists and computer scientists, experts in computer vision, machine learning and quantum information. The QML-CVC’s Core statement is: Quantum Technologies will allow us to define Computer Vision within a new domain of knowledge. This provides a number of driving questions: Q1: How do we do Machine Learning in a quantum world? Q2: Which classical tasks could be solved in a practical way with quantum technology? Q3: Which are the unveiled social impacts of Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence? Thus, the QML-CVC’s research approach combines a top down approach from general research topics in quantum computing, with a bottom-up approach for the identification of classical tasks which could be solved in a practical way with quantum technology.
The candidates will work on specific topics related to Quantum Machine Learning. Particularly by providing a roadmap for the use of quantum machine learning in the context of classical machine learning provided by the CVC. Hybrid classical and quantum machine learning approaches will be tackled.
Key Duties
- Develop Research tasks on algorithms for quantum computation, particularly those that exploit the structure of tensor networks. Particularly:
- contributing to a state of the art in field.
- Contributing to a roadmap for research in the field in the context of the CVC.
- Participate in the training activities of the group, contributing with talks and seminars.
- Participate in the reading groups of the group, analyzing state of the art papers on the field.
Requirements:
- Education
- Physics, Mathematics or Computer science degree (or a student finalizing the studies)
- PhD in Quantum Machine Learning or similar.
- Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Previous experience in research in a quantum technologies related institution.
- Knowledge of quantum machine learning methods and tools.
- Good programming skills using python and quantum computing libraries, such as Qiskit or similar.
- Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Programming skills in other languages.
- Competences
- Fluency in spoken and written English
- Ability to think creatively, work independently and make decisions.
- Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure
- The candidate must be an effective communicator, multitask, and work well on collaborative and interdisciplinary designs.
- Other merits
- Having had their PhD read in the previous 2 years.
- Valuable experience in Spanish and International public research entities.
Evaluation of applications:
Candidatures that meet the above requirements will be evaluated using the following criteria:
- Requirements of the candidates (50 points).
- Other merits (30 points).
- Experience superior to that required in a similar position (up to 20 points).
Conditions
- We offer a full-time temporary contract (4 months)
- Duration: 05/05/2025 – 31/08/2025
- Total compensation: €12,000 gross for the 4‐month contract period. This amount is corresponding to an equivalent annual gross salary of €36,000 euros, in line with our institution’s salary scale.
- Work Modality: This position is primarily on-site. Exceptionally, remote work may be allowed (within Spain only). In such cases, the employee will be required to attend in-person meetings at the CVC twice a month during three days to collaborate with the team.
