About CVC 

The Computer Vision Center (CVC) is a non-profit research center established in 1995 by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Its mission is to carry out cutting-edge research that has the highest international impact in the field of computer vision. It also promotes the transference of knowledge to industry and society.  

Computer vision is an exciting research area and an omnipresent technology, essentially empowering machines with the sense of vision. The CVC is a successful marriage between knowledge and innovation. Context and Mission 

The CVC is looking for a PhD student to collaborate on continual learning of foundation models. The developed theory is to be applied in the document intelligence domain. The objective is to perform fundamental research on extending continual learning theory to the era of foundation models. This position is linked to the ELLIOT project (funded by the European Union) on European Large Open Multi-Modal Foundation Models. 

The PhD position will be in the Vision and Language research group and the Learning and Machine Perception group. The supervision will be by Dr. Dimosthenis Karatzas and Dr. Joost van de Weijer

Key Duties 

  • The PhD student will have to perform research on the topic of the project.  
  • The PhD student is expected to present results at top conference (NeurIPS, CVPR, ICLR; ICCV, etc). 
  • The PhD student should perform research on continual learning within the context of foundation models. Possible subjects include, personalization of models, and/or analysis of biases in continually learned foundation models.  

Requirements:  

Education 

  • Computer science degree (or a student finalizing the studies) 

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience 

  • Previous experience in Deep Learning  
  • Excellent Programming skills 

Desirable Knowledge and Professional Experience 

  • Previous experience in Computer Vision 
  • Previous experience in Continual Learning / Document Analysis 
  • Publications in relevant venues 

Competences 

  • Fluency in spoken and written English 
  • Ability to think creatively, work independently and make decisions. 
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure 
  • The candidate must be an effective communicator, multitask, and work well on collaborative and interdisciplinary designs. 

Other merits 

  • Experience superior to that required in similar positions is valued. 

Evaluation of applications:

Candidatures that meet the above requirements will be evaluated using the following criteria: 

  • Essential and desirable requirements of the candidates (80 points). 
  • Other merits (20 points). 

Conditions  

  • The position will be located at Computer Vision Center (Campus Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). 
  • We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week) temporary contract, a good environment, flexible working hours 
  • Duration: 4 years PhD contract 
  • Salary in accordance with qualifications and experience of the candidate and to CVCs salary regulations. 
  • Starting date: earliest 1-7-2025, latest 1-10-2025
