Overview 

The Computer Vision Center (CVC) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) are launching a joint call for applications for a PhD grant "Maria Rúbies" within the framework of the PhD Program in Computer Science at UAB. This initiative is designed to foster cutting-edge research in computer vision and artificial intelligence, with a strong focus on socially relevant applications that align with UAB’s strategic research priorities. 

We seek talented and motivated PhD candidates who are committed to research that makes a difference in society. The program ensures a transparent, merit-based selection process, prioritizing impactful topics. 

Research Topics 

The proposed PhD projects of a "Maria Rúbies" grantee must be aligned with CVC’s areas of research expertise: https://www.cvc.uab.es/research-lines/ 

Applicants are welcome to propose their own topics, provided they demonstrate strong social impact and strategic relevance to UAB and CVC’s research agenda. 

Grant Details 

  • Duration: 4 years (full predoctoral contract). 
  • Funding: According to Article 21.d) of Law 14/2011, of June 1, on Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Article 7 of Royal Decree 103/2019, of March 1, which approves the Statute of the Researcher in Training (EPIF), the salary for each year is set with the minimum reference being the category corresponding to group 1 (M3) of the labor personnel salary table included in the single labor agreement for the General Administration of the State. 
  • Therefore, the gross annual salary will be €18,180.41 for the first and second years, €19,479.01 for the third year, and €24,348.76 for the fourth year. These amounts are the ones established for the 2025 fiscal year and may be subject to increase.  The salary table used as a reference by the EPIF can be consulted at this link and is updated at least annually. The amounts indicated correspond to gross salary, from which the applicable contributions and taxes established by Spanish tax regulations will be deducted. 
  • Location: CVC, Edifici O, Campus UAB 
  • Supervision: Each PhD will be supervised by either a CVC University-linked researcher (IVU) or a CVC researcher who is UAB faculty member, ensuring academic rigor and alignment with both academic and research priorities. 
  • Mentorship & Development: Candidates will benefit from a multicultural research hub in Computer Vision, bustling with over 100 experts from more than 20 countries, in addition to being able to learn in responsible AI, and take advantage of opportunities for international collaboration and entrepreneurship opportunities. 

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Academic Requirements: Master’s degree in computer science, computer vision, engineering, mathematics, or related fields. 
  • Social Impact Commitment: Applicants must submit a short essay explaining how their research will contribute to society. 
  • Diversity & Inclusion (EDI): We encourage applications from underrepresented groups in AI. 
  • Previous Funding Recipients: having benefited from a grant ("Rosa Sensat", "Elena Maseras", or "Maria Capdevila") of the CVC Talent Program in the past. 

Selection Process 

The evaluation process follows a rigorous, multi-stage assessment

  • Project Relevance Review: CVC committee ensures alignment with strategic priorities. 
  • Candidate Shortlisting: Based on academic background, motivation, and social impact. 
  • Interviews: Finalists will present their research proposal and commitment to social impact.
