About CVC

The Computer Vision Center (CVC) is a non-profit research center established in 1995 by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Its mission is to conduct internationally impactful research in computer vision and to promote knowledge transfer to industry and society.

Computer vision is an exciting and rapidly evolving field that enables machines to perceive and interpret the visual world. The CVC combines scientific excellence with innovation, fostering strong collaborations with industry and creating several successful spin-offs.

Context and Mission

The Quantum Machine Learning Group at the CVC (QML-CVC) seeks a physicist to contribute to a research project on Quantum Machine Learning. The QML-CVC group is a multi-disciplinary team of physicists and computer scientists, specialized in computer vision, machine learning and quantum information. The QML-CVC’s core statement is: Quantum Technologies will allow us to define Computer Vision within a new domain of knowledge.

This provides a number of driving questions:

Q1: How do we do Machine Learning in a quantum world?

Q2: Which classical tasks could be solved in a practical way with quantum technology?

Q3: Which are the unveiled social impacts of Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence?

Thus, the QML-CVC’s research approach combines a top down approach from general research topics in quantum computing, with a bottom-up approach for the identification of classical tasks which could be solved in a practical way with quantum technology.

Candidate will work on specific topics related to Quantum Machine Learning. Particularly by providing a roadmap for the use of quantum machine learning in the context of classical machine learning provided by the CVC. Hybrid classical and quantum machine learning approaches will be tackled.

Key Duties

  • Conduct research on algorithms for quantum computation, particularly those that exploit the structure of tensor networks. Particularly:
    • Contributing to a state of the art in field.
    • Contributing to a roadmap for research in the field in the context of the CVC.
  • Participate in group training activities, giving talks and seminars.
  • Take part in reading groups by analyzing and discussing state of the art publications on the field.

  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Programming skills in other languages.
  • Competences
    • Fluency in spoken and written English.
    • Ability to think creatively, work independently and make decisions.
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure.
    • The candidate must be an effective communicator, multitask, and work well on collaborative and interdisciplinary designs.
  • Other merits
    • PhD completed within the past two years.
    • Valuable experience in Spanish and International public research institutions.
  • Evaluation of applications:
    • Applications meeting the requirements will be evaluated as follows:
    • Fulfillment of requirements: 50 points.
    • Other merits: 30 points.
    • Experience beyond the minimum required: up to 20 points.

Conditions

  • Part-time temporary contract (7-8 months) starting in September 2025.
  • Salary: proportional to an annual gross salary of €36,000 euros, according to the institution’s salary scale.
