About the CVC
The Computer Vision Center (CVC) is a non-profit research center established in 1995 by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Its mission is to carry out cutting-edge research that has the highest international impact in the field of computer vision. It also promotes the transference of knowledge to industry and society.
Computer vision is an exciting research area and an omnipresent technology, essentially empowering machines with the sense of vision. The CVC is a successful marriage between knowledge and innovation. In addition to our cutting-edge scientific achievements, we have established lasting ties with industrial partners and created several spin-off companies.
Context
This position is part of a project focused on Quantum Machine Learning and Computer Vision (within the RETECH project QML-CV) Funded by the European Union - Next Generation EU, under the supervision of Dr. Fernando Vilariño.
It is a temporary four-month position, during which the selected candidate will carry out the following tasks:
- Review the state of the art on variational quantum algorithms and their applications to optimization and 3D rendering problems.
- Design encoding strategies to map 3D rendering data and tasks into suitable quantum representations.
- Implement baseline classical algorithms for 3D rendering optimization to establish benchmarks.
- Develop hybrid quantum–classical variational circuits tailored to 3D rendering challenges.
- Experiment with different ansatz designs (hardware-efficient, problem-inspired, tensor-network based) for VQA.
- Integrate quantum-inspired methods (tensor networks, low-rank decompositions) to complement quantum simulations.
- Run experiments on quantum simulators and cloud-based quantum hardware to evaluate feasibility.
- Optimize parameter training using classical optimizers and explore strategies to mitigate barren plateaus.
- Benchmark the performance of developed VQAs against classical baselines in terms of accuracy, convergence, and scalability.
- Document all implementations with reproducible code and experiment logs.
- Contribute to a final technical report and presentation summarizing results, insights, and open research directions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering (completed in the 2024–2025 academic year).
- Master’s degree in Computer Vision.
- Trac of publications in Computer Vision and Quantum Machine Learning.
- High level of spoken and written English and native Catalan.
Merits to be Valued
- Mark in the Master in Computer Vision (50%)
- Track of publications in Arxive in Quantum Machine Learning (30%)
- Experience in research groups in QML.
Evaluation of Applications
Applications that meet the requirements will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Fulfillment of requirements: 70 points
- Merits: 30 points
Conditions
- Four months part-time temporary contract.
- Start date: November 3, 2025
