Commitment to the Catalan AI Strategy:
CVC continued its commitment to the Catalonia.AI strategy, actively contributing to the promotion of AI in Catalonia through the coordination of the Artificial Intelligence Research Alliance (AIRA) and our participation in the Centre of Innovation for Data tech and AI (CIDAI), the AI node of the Digital Catalonia Alliance (DCA), and the Catalan Observatory for Ethics in AI (OEIAC).
Here are some of the highlights from 2024 within the Catalan AI community:
sAIling Catalonia
The CVC organized sAIling Catalonia, an event designed to bring together the Catalan AI community within the framework of the America’s Cup. The gathering took place on September 19 at Torre Mapfre, Barcelona.
Inauguration of the ELLIS Unit Barcelona
The ELLIS Unit Barcelona was officially inaugurated on July 12. This initiative, co-directed by Dr. Dimostenis Karatzas, CVC’s Associate Director, aims to establish Catalonia as a leader in AI research excellence.
Catalan Mission to Quebec
CVC participated in the Catalan mission to Quebec to promote AI research and innovation between both regions. This initiative was led by the Government of Catalonia and the XARXA RDI-IA.
Barcelona joined ELIAS Alliance
Barcelona became part of the ELIAS European alliance as one of its innovation nodes. The CVC is a key institution within the Barcelona node, co-directed by Dr. Dimostenis Karatzas.
Ramon Llull - AIRA Postdoctoral Programme
The 1st call for the Ramon Llull–AIRA Postdoctoral Program was launched in late 2024. Coordinated by the CVC within AIRA and co-funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie program, it offers 33 postdoctoral AI fellowships to institutions across Catalonia.
Inauguration UAB-Cruïlla Chair of AI in Music & Arts
The Chair UAB-Cruïlla of AI in Music and Arts held its inaugural event on October 16 during UAB’s Innovation Week. The CVC is one of the entities involved in this initiative, which is directed by Dr. Fernando Vilariño, CVC’s Associate Director.
Xarxa RDI-IA
The Xarxa RDI-IA, coordinated by the CVC, achieved significant milestones this year. The AI ACCELERATOR program successfully fostered the development of new business ideas. Additionally, the inaugural Annual Conference of Xarxa RDI-IA, held in May 2024, brought together key stakeholders to advance AI research and collaboration.
11th Annual Catalan Meeting in Computer Vision
The Computer Vision community of Catalonia celebrated the Annual Catalan Meeting on Computer Vision (ACMCV) on September 17. Organized annually by the CVC, this event brings together research, talent generation, and industry in one day.

The BrAIn Roads Documentary
The BrAIn Roads is an outreach documentary that tells the thrilling research journey of a group of researchers from the CVC developing an AI project on autonomous driving in rural areas. The film is available on the 3CAT and YouTube platforms.
Open Day 2024
CVC celebrated its annual Open Day on May 8th. During the CVC Open Day, attendees had the opportunity to explore our facilities and laboratories, experience live research demonstrations, learn about the latest advancements in our research areas, and meet our researchers and experts.
European Performing Science Night
From September 27-28, the European Performing Science Night (EPSN) took place as part of the European Researchers' Night, an event designed to bridge the gap between science and society through an experimental and emotional approach centred on art. Project led by Épica Foundation – La Fura dels Baus, with participation from ICM-CSIC, UOC, and CVC.
Festa de la Ciència
As every year, on June 8th, we participated in the Barcelona Science Festival (Festa de la Ciència). CVC researchers Alexandra Gómez Villa and Diego Porres led a workshop on generative AI and art.

BadamonIA
BadamonIA is a technological and AI-driven creativity experiment conducted in collaboration with schools, focusing on a co-creative proposal for the design of the Dimoni of Badalona. This collaborative project involves the Computer Vision Center (CVC), Épica Foundation - La Fura dels Baus, and Col·legi Badalonès.
AI Workshops - Programa ARGÓ-UAB
The UAB School of Engineering and the CVC, together with the Argó ICE UAB Program, organized two workshops on Artificial Intelligence aimed at high school students.
Bojos per la IA
The AI course from the Mad for Science (Bojos per la Ciència) programme of the Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation is a course developed by the IIIA-CSIC, with the collaboration of CVC and IRI, aimed at 1st-year A-level students with a scientific vocation interested in STEM careers.
Research, Service & Creation program: AI and Smart Recycling
The CVC participated for the third time in the Government of Catalonia Department of Education program "Research, Service, and Creation (RCS)" aimed at high school students. The CVC coordinates the project on AI and smart recycling, which involves 10 high schools in Catalonia.
