Commitment to the Catalan AI ecosystem

CVC continued its commitment to the Catalonia.AI strategy, actively contributing to the promotion of AI in Catalonia through the coordination of the Artificial Intelligence Research Alliance (AIRA) and our participation in the Centre of Innovation for Data Tech and AI (CIDAI), the AI node of the Digital Catalonia Alliance (DCA).

Here are some of the highlights from 2025 within the Catalan AI ecosystem:

XARXA RDI-IA

Xarxa RDI-IA, coordinated by the CVC, achieved significant milestones this year. The AI ACCELERATOR program successfully fostered the development of new business ideas. Additionally, the 2nd Annual Conference of Xarxa RDI-IA, held on May 29, brought together over +200 key stakeholders to advance AI research and collaboration.

ELLIS Unit Barcelona

In 2025, the Unit supported AI events organised by its partner institutions: “AI Multimodal Analysis and Sport”, led by Dr Coloma Ballester (UPF), the keynote “Data Scaling Laws of Vision Synthetic Data” organised by Dr Petia Radeva (UB) with Adriana Romero and Michal Dozdzal (Facebook AI) and the 3rd seminar featuring Dr Oliver Brock. It also submitted new Fellow and Scholar nominations.

Ramon Llull - AIRA Postdoctoral Programme

The MSCA COFUND RLL – AIRA Programme, coordinated by the CVC, launched its first Postdoctoral Fellowship call in 2025, offering 17 positions. The call attracted 79 applications, 54 of which were eligible. After evaluations and shortlisting, the first cohort of fellows will begin their 36-month appointments at the CVC or one of 12 partner institutions in early 2026, reinforcing Catalonia’s AI research ecosystem.

ELIAS Alliance

The ELIAS Node Barcelona is a strategic hub for advancing knowledge transfer in Catalonia and beyond. Together with 7 nodes across 5 countries, it works to strengthen Europe’s leadership in AI excellence. Since the initiative’s launch in 2024, the Barcelona Node, led by Dr Dimosthenis Karatzas, has begun its first key actions, including participation in the AI Summit 2025 in Copenhagen.

UAB-Cruïlla Chair of AI in Music and Arts

The UAB-Cruïlla Chair, a public–private partnership, promotes cutting-edge AI research in Music and the Arts. In 2025, together with the CVC, it hosted “Artificial Intelligence, Arts and Innovation”, showcasing prototypes and an open innovation booth at the Cruïlla Festival.

12th Annual Catalan Meeting in Computer Vision

The Computer Vision community of Catalonia celebrated the Annual Catalan Meeting on Computer Vision (ACMCV) on September 17. Organised annually by the CVC, this event brings together research, talent generation, and industry in one day.

| CATALONIA AI STRATEGY 2030

On November 2025, the Government of Catalonia officially presented the new CataloniaAI2030 Artificial Intelligence strategy, aiming to establish Catalonia as a European leader in responsible, ethical, and safe AI. The CVC actively participates in coordinating several key initiatives within this strategy, including ELLIS Barcelona, Xarxa RDI-IA and Ramon Llull - AIRA Postdoctoral Programme.
