Space, Design, and Interactive Vision: Creating a Spatial Operating Environment

Oblong Industries is a technology start-up focused on changing the way people work, create, and collaborate. We are building a Spatial Operating Environment (SOE) that supports collaboration between multiple users and multiple machines by providing a gestural interface combined with a low-level data transport layer to create a unified environment between disparate devices. In this presentation, I will describe our motivation, design philosophy, sensing technologies, and the systems we have built that embody our vision for an SOE. After introducing Oblong and our current technology, I will focus on our research and development efforts to create a markerless, vision system that can provide an equally compelling user experience as our existing systems that rely on special gloves or an ultrasonic wand.
