The Computer Vision Center received an honouring visit from the Catalan Consellera of Research and Universities, with the opportunity to showcase its technology to a set of institutional actors and legislators, key to the government of Catalonia.

The Honourable Dr. Gemma Geis, Consellera of Research and Universities of the Catalan Government, has visited the Computer Vision Center, along with a set of distinguished stakeholders from the regional government today, 2nd of Sepetember. This institutional visit had the aim to know, first-hand, about our research and development activities and counted with the presence of Mr. Josep Ribas, General Secretary of the Catalonian University Council in the Catalan Government, Mr. Joan Gómez, Director of Research of Catalonia, and the Excellent and Magnificent Dr. Javier Lafuente, Rector of the UAB.

During the visit, the Consellera met with Dr. Josep Lladós, CVC Director, and Dr. Antonio López, ICREA Professor at the CVC. It started with an  institutional presentation by Dr. Lladós about what is Computer Vision, the way research and technology transfer is developed at CVC, as well as the importance of our research center on the Catalan ecosystem of Artificial Intelligence and computer vision.

Then, Dr. López spoke briefly about the autonomous mobility CVC projects and the key role of computer vision in the development of the automotive field.

The CVC, founder member of AIRA -Artificial Intelligence Research Alliance of Catalonia-

Noticia AIRA

The Catalan Government has recently created AIRA (Artificial Intelligence Research Alliance of Catalonia), an alliance to foster a coordinate its strategy in Artificial Intelligence, aimed to the promotion of scientific research, talent management and acceleration of the development of solutions based on artificial intelligence in Catalonia.

In its kick-off, AIRA is constituted by the Computer Vision Center (CVC); the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC); the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA); the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics (IIRI) and the Intelligent Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Center (IDEAl-UPC).

AIRA is an initiative promoted by the Department of the Vice-Presidency and Digital and Territorial Policies, and the Department of Research and Universities within the framework of the Artificial Intelligence Strategy of Catalonia (CATALONIA.AI). It is configured as a cooperative workspace, in which the catalan’s leading institutes and research centers in artificial intelligence will developed a coordinated strategy.

Three CVC papers selected for the ICCV2021 Conference

CVC is more than happy to announce that three of its papers have been selected for the ICCV2021 Conference, the premier international computer vision event.
Two of them were from Joost van de Weijer’s group and the other one from Sergio Escalera’s. Hereafter you can find them with a summary.

TransferI2I: Transfer Learning for Image-to-Image Translation from Small Datasets
Yaxing Wang, Hector Laria Mantecon, Joost van de Weijer, Laura Lopez-Fuentes, Bogdan Raducanu
Learning image-to-image (I2I) translation requires large datasets. In this paper, the authors propose transfer learning theory for I2I and show that they can now train high-quality systems on very small datasets.

Generalized Source-free Domain Adaptation
Shiqi Yang, Yaxing Wang, Joost van de Weijer, Luis Herranz, Shangling Jui
The authors propose a new method that can adapt to new target domains while keeping performance on the source domain without the need for any labels on the target domain.

DeePSD: Automatic Deep Skinning And Pose Space Deformation For 3D Garment Animation
Hugo Bertiche, Meysam Madadi, Emilio Tylson, Sergio Escalera
The authors present a novel solution to the garment animation problem through deep learning. Their contribution allows animating any template outfit with arbitrary topology and geometric complexity. When giving a piece (or set) of clothes, our approach links it to a “human body skeleton” thus, both clothing and person move in unison. Additionally, small deformations to the outfit for a realistic and consistent result are added.
